The picturesque seaside village
of Howth is located on the peninsula of Howth
Head, north east of Dublin City. It's just a
short train, bus or car journey from the city
centre nine miles (15km) away. Howth has a bustling
working harbour, where you can watch fishing
trawlers landing their catch and purchase the
freshest seafood from the fish markets along
the West Pier.
Take a stroll around the winding
streets where there are plenty of shops and
galleries to browse in. Relax with a drink in
one of the many local pubs or enjoy the culinary
delights that the area is famous for in one
of the award winning restaurants around the
harbour.
There's a shingle beach nearby
at Balscadden Bay, and the sandy beaches of
Claremont and Burrow are ideal for families
and formaking great sandcastles. Howth has exhilarating
walking routes along coastal footpaths or climb
to the summit for panoramic views of Dublin
Bay. It is also a paradise for the bird watcher
and plant lover.
There are many reminders of
the area's rich history, including the 12th
century Abbey and graveyard in the village,
the Bailey Lighthouse, and the portal tomb which
is beleived to date from 2500 BC.
